Kalmar is located opposite the island of Öland, linked to it by Sweden's longest six-kilometer bridge. Each year in July, a Renaissance Festival takes place there featuring demonstrations of knightly combat, tournaments, and troubadour performances. You will find there colorful houses Swedish call Tripp, Trapp, Trull which means a game of tic-tac-toe.

Characteristic for the area is the Raukar, groups of limestone rocks with unique and intriguing shapes. They were a feature of the film settings of the controversial Ingmar Bergman. The quoted "The Seventh Seal" is the director's most famous film and inspired such filmmakers as Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen.
